Skin Cancer Treatments

Altitude Dermatology specializes in a range of skin cancer treatments, typically recommended based on the type and location of cancer.

Curettage and Electrodesiccation

Curettage involves using a curette, a specialized instrument, to scrape away cancerous tissue. Following this, an electrode or electric needle is employed to heat and destroy any remaining cancer cells.

This method is typically recommended for superficial basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas, which are confined to the top layer of the skin. The procedure is quick and usually requires no recovery time.

Excision

Excision is a surgical procedure that involves removing a portion of skin and underlying tissue. After the removal, the wound is typically closed with stitches. This procedure can be used for both benign (non-cancerous) lesions and skin cancers that are not located on the face.

Topical Chemotherapy

Prescription topical chemotherapy creams are used to treat superficial basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, which are limited to the top layer of the skin.

Altitude Dermatology is proud to offer Mohs surgical intervention, also known as Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise and highly effective treatment for skin cancer. Named after its inventor, Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, the procedure is designed to remove skin cancer layer by layer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. It is particularly useful for treating basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, the two most common types of skin cancer, as well as certain types of melanoma.

When to Consider Mohs

Mohs should be considered an option if you have:
  • Recurrent skin cancers
  • Skin cancers located in areas where preserving cosmetic and functional outcomes are crucial (e.g., eyes, nose, ears, lips).
  • Large or aggressive skin cancers.
  • Cancers with indistinct edges.
  • Skin cancers that have recurred after previous treatment.
