What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized procedure for removing skin cancer with a focus on preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The technique involves removing the cancerous tissue layer by layer, examining each layer under a microscope until only cancer-free tissue remains. This method ensures the highest cure rates while minimizing scarring and preserving function, especially in sensitive areas like the face, ears, and neck.
The Mohs Surgery Process
The surgeon removes the visible portion of the skin cancer along with a thin layer of surrounding tissue.
The removed tissue is processed and examined under a microscope to determine if cancer cells remain at the edges.
If cancer cells are found, additional layers are removed and examined until no cancer cells are detected.
Once all cancerous cells are removed, the site is repaired. Depending on the size and location of the wound, this may involve stitches or allowing the wound to heal naturally.
Why Choose Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery offers several benefits over other skin cancer treatments:
Highest Cure Rates
Mohs surgery is the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer, with 97-99% cure rates.
Tissue Prevention
By examining tissue layer by layer, the procedure ensures minimal removal of healthy tissue.
Precision
Ideal for treating skin cancers in cosmetically sensitive or functionally critical areas, like the face or hands.
Reduced Risk of Recurrence
Mohs surgery is particularly useful for treating recurrent skin cancers, where other treatments may have failed.
Is Mohs Surgery Right for You?
Consider Mohs surgery if you have:
- Skin cancers located in areas where cosmetic and functional preservation is crucial (e.g., face, ears, hands).
- Large, aggressive, or recurrent skin cancers.
- Cancers with poorly defined borders.
- Previous Treatments that were unsuccessful
